Important Information about Marijuana Seeds You Need to Know

The time and money you invest to grow your own cannabis will pay off if you do it correctly. You don’t have to guess and you don’t have to be intimidated. Instead, you need to follow this information. If you do, you will be able to have all the information you need at your fingertips. You will be able to select the right seeds, grow them successfully, and even understand the process of storing the product.

You will be very happy with your efforts when you see your plants growing. You will be rewarded when you get to use the cannabis and enjoy the delightful taste and flavor. You may decide you would like to harvest some seeds from your own plants, and it is easy to do so and become a breeder. Then you don’t have to buy more seeds to continue growing your plans. This process also allows you to customize your growing process and to create the strain you really want.

Selecting your Seeds

This is your ultimate guide to successfully selecting and growing those cannabis seeds. It all starts with selecting the right seeds. If the quality is lacking or you get the wrong ones for your need, your process is going to be sabotaged from the very beginning. It is encouraged to take your time and verify what you are getting and that those seeds fit your needs.

Seeds are created when a female plant is pollenated by a male plant. You aren’t going to get any seeds from clones. The males are never able to produce cannabis seeds. What you usually smoke is the unfertilized bud from a female plant. This is why it can become complicated when you want to be able to grow your plants but also be able to harvest your own seeds from them.

You have a few options though when it comes to obtaining that possibility. For those of you who reside in a state where recreational or medical marijuana is legal, you can visit dispensaries in your area. They should have a wide selection of such seeds for you to choose from. You can also go online and buy them from a verified and reputable seed bank. Most of these seeds banks will ship your purchase anywhere in the world, and they do so quickly.

Depending on where you reside, ordering cannabis seeds and having them delivered to you can be illegal. There may be criminal charges but in reality, it is very uncommon for this to happen. The packages tend to be discreet so there is no indicator on the package about what is inside. If you order from an International seed bank though, you may get a letter from the U.S. Customs stating they have confiscated them.

Don’t get frustrated with the process of selecting your seeds. It can be tricky but it will make a profound difference in how your plants grow and the process for growing them. Make sure the strains you select will serve you well. Here are some pointers to help you with the selection:

  • Color  and Shape – stick with darker colored seeds rather than the lighter tan ones. It is fine if you see stripes or blotches of dark brown on them. Never buy any that are very light or that are green in color.
  • Hardness – Check the outer shell of the seeds. They should be intact and very durable. Don’t buy any that feel soft or that appear to be damaged.
  • Size – The size will depend on the strain you purchase. Sativa seeds are small and they tend to all be very similar in size and color. The Indica strains are going to be larger and you will notice differences in shape, size, and coloration.

Once you have your cannabis seeds selected, it is time to germinate them. This process is important so they can start to sprout. If they don’t germinate, you will never have plants that grow successfully. Keep in mind, if growing such plants is illegal where you reside, they are considered to be viable plants once they germinate.

This is the process of your seeds starting to sprout. There are several ways you can complete this process. It can be a good idea to try the different methods. This will share with you what you have the best results with. It will also help you to determine which of the methods is your personal preference.

Direct Soil

The biggest risk with germinating seeds occurs when you use the direct soil method. This can save you time overall, but if your seeds don’t germinate you have wasted both your time and your investment. This process involves putting the seeds right into the prepared soil in a small container. Make sure the soil is damp, put the seeds into the soil, and cover with more soil.

It is a good idea to cover the containers tightly with plastic wrap to help seal in the moisture. This will give the seeds the same type of environment that is commonly found in a greenhouse. Place the containers in areas where they will get plenty of sunlight. Check them daily and add more water to the soil if necessary so it doesn’t get dry. The seeds should start to germinate in about five days.

Paper Towel

The use of a wet paper towel is a very common method for germinating your cannabis seeds. While it does take longer than other methods, you don’t have as high of a risk of the strains being damaged or ruined. It is a simple process, just get a paper towel moist and fold it and place it into a baggie. Place them in the folded area and put a second wet paper towel on top of it. Remove the air and secure the baggie closed.

If you rely on this method to germinate your cannabis seeds, you need to keep the baggie in an area that is both warm and dark. Check on it every day and watch for the roots to appear. Once you see them, transfer the seeds into your prepared soil. If you neglect to check on them, the seeds may suffer due to mold forming.

Pre Soaking

This method involves soaking your seeds in warm water until they sink to the bottom. Fill a glass jar about half way full of the water, but make sure the water isn’t too hot or it will ruin your seeds. This process is going to allow germination to take place in less time. It will also ensure the entire seed is moist before you plant it.

You have to be careful not to presoak the seeds for too long though. You should never leave them in the jar for more than 7 days. After that amount of time, you risk the cannabis seeds being destroyed due to mold or rotting. Check them every day and remove them from the water as soon as you see a root appear or at the end of the 7th day- whichever occurs first.

Around six weeks, it will be time to identify which sex your seeds happen to be. If you are using feminized seeds, you can completely skip this part of the process. Since feminized seeds can only come from female plants, this is a great choice if you want to just grow them from a clone later on.

However, if you don’t have feminized seeds, you definitely want to identify the sex of your plants early in the growing process. You will then need to separate the female plants from the male plants. If you don’t, there is a huge chance of unwanted pollination taking place. Why does this matter? The female plants aren’t going to continue to grow their buds if they are pollinated. Instead, they use their nutrients to create more seeds.

The production of pre-flowers  between the branch and the main part of the stalk are indicators of female cannabis plants. These pre-flowers will have white hairs which are long and thin. They are actually part of the female sex organ for your plants.

You will also find the appearance of pre-flowers on the male cannabis plants. They will have small bundle that face downward. They are actually pollen sacks. The buds won’t have any hairs on them if the cannabis plants are male.

Once you have made the decision to generate your own seeds from those plants, you need to do so in the correct manner. When you have healthy plants thriving, it does make sense to use them to generate your own seeds for future plant growth. You can choose to pollinate a female plant and generate plenty of seeds or you can save some branches from your plants and harvest them for seeds to use the next time around.
